A group of foreign diplomats including US and EU ambassadors has emphasised on the de-escalation of political conflict for the sake of human rights and democracy in Bangladesh.
Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Greg Wilcock made the comment while briefing journalists on behalf of the envoys after their meeting with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office this evening.
“We encouraged confidence-building measures — including the de-escalation of Bangladesh’s political conflict — in the interest of fostering safety, stability, growth, human rights and democracy in Bangladesh,” the envoy added.
“We called for an end to the Bangladesh’s continuing violence and our efforts to this end will continue,” he said.
A group of ambassadors, high commissioners and Charges d’Affaires met with the BNP chairperson to discuss Bangladesh’s current events.
“Our meeting with the BNP chief followed a similar meeting with the Bangladesh foreign minister on March 1,” he added.
“Recalling our previous statements on recent events in Bangladesh, and those by the UN, we called for an end to Bangladesh’s continuing violence,” added the Australian diplomat.
The envoys entered Khaleda’s office around 6:35pm and held a two-hour meeting.
