The government on Thursday made a proposal to Saarc for launching a project on language conversion, aiming to enable the people of eight Saarc countries to have various important information about the region, including their respective tradition and culture, in their national languages.
“This will actually enhance the communication skill and cooperation, and help the people of Saarc countries to know about development, tradition and culture of each other’s country,” Information and Communication Secretary NI Khan said.
The secretary made the proposal when a four-Saarc delegation headed by Director of Department of ICT of Bhutan Phuntosho Tobgay held a meeting with him at his office in the city.
The Saarc delegation responded positively to the proposal and asked the ICT secretary to submit a proposal immediately to Saarc Development Fund (SDF) so that they could raise the issue for taking a decision at the meeting of SDF to be held in Bhutan on March 10 next.
“We’re already working to make a proposal involving various components, including the development of a software about language converter, and hopefully we’ll submit it to the SDF this month as the Saarc delegation requested me to do the same,” NI Khan said.
Now the Saarc webportal is providing information about the member countries in English, but if a language converter is introduced the information in English will automatically be converted into national languages of the respective member countries, he told the delegation.
