They say Mahi believes personal grudge led to the attack in the wee hours of Sunday at Tejgaon.

A person close to the mayor contender who declined to be named said, “Who is the beneficiary of the incident? It may seem Annisul Huq is guilty, because he is the beneficiary.

“But the nature of the attack suggests it has been prompted by personal grudge, anger. That leads to the possibility of another side being involved. That means chances of Tabith camp carrying out the attack is greater.”

Another source said the BNP started mounting pressure on Mahi from Saturday morning to step aside from the election.

The source quoted Mahi as saying,”Senior BNP leaders clearly said ‘we are going to lose because of you. Mahi is wasting votes.’ In fact, discussions were going on about me inside (the party).”

His private secretary Jahangir Alam filed a case against eight to 10 unidentified people after the attack.

Bikalpadhara Bangladesh Chairman AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury’s son Mahi is contesting with the ‘eagle’ symbol.

Badruddoza Chowdhury was Bangladesh’s president during a term of BNP, of which
he was the founding secretary general.

The BNP did not respond to Mahi’s call for supporting him in the polls. The party
decided to back former FBCCI president Abdul Awal Mintoo’s son Tabith. His
symbol is ‘bus’.

Ruling Awami League is backing former FBCCI chief Annisul Huq in Dhaka North.
