The much-awaited Dhaka-Chittagong four-lane highway is going to be opened for traffic before this Eid-ul-Fitr.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would formally inaugurate the four-lane highway on July 2.
The minister made the announcement while inspecting the project works at Bhatiary area in Chittagong on Monday.
Talking to the reporters, the minister said: “This is an Eid gift from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the countrymen.”
“All works including construction of 23 bridges, 243 culverts and 14 by-passes on the 192 kilometre stretch of the road from Daudkandi to Chittagong has already been completed,” said the minister.
The minister also expressed his optimism that the commuters now could travel from Dhaka to Chittagong in four and half hours.
“Apart from Dhaka-Chittagong four-lane, Mymensingh-Joydebpur four-lane will be inaugurated at the same time. Besides, the construction of Dhaka-Chittagong elevated expressway will be started from the end of the year,” said Obaidul.
The Dhaka-Chittagong four-lane project got approval from the ECNEC on December 26, 2005.
The project was supposed to be completed by June 2012. Later, the deadline was reset to December 2016 following three extensions.
