Professional journalists who are deprived of Jatiya Press Club membership on Sunday gave a seven-day ultimatum to the authorities concerned to award them the membership, threatening to stage a sit-in on the club premises to realise the demand.

The ultimatum came from a rally held at the Jatiya Press Club under the banner of ‘Jatiya Press Club Membership-deprived Journalist Forum’.

Speakers said the Press Club management committee has to take appropriate steps to resolve the problem immediately, otherwise they will be held responsible for everything.

They also announced to stage a sit-in on the press club premises on June 9 if their demand goes unmet by the deadline.

They also said that Press Club authorities have kept hanging in the balance the membership-providing process for more than one decade.

As a result, a good number of professional journalists have been deprived of the membership which is unacceptable and it will not be tolerated anymore.

Deprived journalists also gave a list of professional journalists prepared by Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) to the press club authorities to grant membership.

Secretary general of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, secretary of DUJ Altaf Mahmud and former general secretary of National Press Club Shafiqur Rahman, among others, addressed the rally while former general secretary of DUJ Saban Mahmud moderated it.
