A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced three people to life imprisonment in a case filed in connection with the deaths of Dia Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Razib, students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College, in a road accident in 2018.The lifers are bus drivers of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan Masum Billah and Jubayer Sumon and assistant Kazi Asad.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Imrul Qayes handed down the judgement on the road accident that sparked street protests countrywide.
Two accused were acquitted of the case.
The lifers are Jabal-e-Noor drivers Masum Billah and Zobair Mamun and bus assistant Asad Gazi. Asad was tried in absentia.
News agency UNB report says the court also fined them Tk 50,000, and they will have to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment if they fail to pay the fine.
The court also acquitted two people — Jabal-e-Noor owner Jahangir Alam and bus helper Enayet Hossain — as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
Earlier on 14 November, Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge Imrul Qayes fixed 1 December to pass the verdict as both the defence and the prosecution concluded their arguments in the case.
The court examined a total of 37 witnesses out of 41. The investigative officer (IO) filed the charge sheet of the case on 5 September 2018.
On 29 July 2018, Abdul Karim Razib and Dia Khanom Mim, students of class XII and XI respectively of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School and College, were killed on Dhaka’s Airport Road due to reckless driving of two bus drivers of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan.
