Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Dr AK Abdul Momen said here on Friday that there is no scope for vote rigging now as the days of ‘election engineering’ are over.
“The days of election engineering no more exist. Now, there’s little scope for vote rigging… calling external observers to oversee polls means allowing others to boss over us,” he told reporters at an opinion exchange meeting at the local Circuit House.
Dr Momen also said external election observers are not seen in many countries of Europe and America and also Bangladesh’s neighboring countries. “Even, in many countries of the world, there is no public holiday on the election day.”
He said there has been propaganda that the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the execution of Abdul Quader Mollah. “The UN Secretary General didn’t protest it. The UN is in favour of the trial of crimes against humanity.”
Dr Momen also said the UN is very much interested to take more peacekeepers from Bangladesh. “Some 1450 Bangladeshi peacekeepers are joining the peacekeeping mission in Mali.”
