Indian citizen Abdul Rauf alias Daud Merchant, an accused in musician Gulshan Kumar murder in India, was released from Dhaka Central Jail on Sunday night.
In January this year, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said an initiative had been taken for Daud’s repatriation.
Jailer Nesarul Alam confirmed that he was released in the night after he was cleared by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Court on Thursday in a case related to his suspicious movement under section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. There was no report whether Daud was handed over to any Indian authority after release.
Daud Merchant, a reported sidekick of Indian crime boss Daud Ibrahim, was held at Kashimpur Jail gate in Gazipur on December 1, 2014, immediately after his release on bail.
He was arrested on charge of suspicious movement earlier on May 27, 2009, from Mourai in Brahmanbaria.
Daud Merchant alias Rauf Raja, 45, also a convict of the murder of Mumbai music magnate Gulshan Kumar, was now facing other charges, officials said.
Gulshan Kumar, renowned owner of Indian music company T-series, was shot dead on the streets of Mumbai on August 12, 1997.
He was believed to have been murdered through paid killers after refusing to pay extortions to city gangsters. Daud, who had been serving a sentence in an Indian jail since 2002, went into hiding after being released on a 14-day parole in March 2009 to visit his family in Mumbra, a small town about 40 kilometres from Mumbai, the Indian media had reported.
