The High Court on Sunday issued a contempt of court rule against the Cultural Affairs Secretary and the Director General of the Department of Archaeology for flouting its order on illegal eviction from the historic Lalbagh Fort in Old Dhaka.

An HC bench comprising Justice Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Ashraful Kamal came up with the rule following a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

The court asked the officials to explain in two weeks why contempt of court charge should not be drawn against them and punitive action should not be taken against them.

Earlier, the HC issued a rule asking independent MP Haji Mohammad Selim to explain why contempt of court charge should not be drawn against him for violating its order on illegal eviction from the Lalbagh Fort.

Petitioner’s counsel Manzill Morshed said the HC delivered an order on October 26, 2011, to evict all illegal occupations from Lalbagh Fort area.

In compliance with the HC judgment, the authorities concerned on March 30 this year launched an eviction drive to free the Fort area, but it was obstructed by Selim, a former local Awami League leader.
