A Dhaka court on Thursday warned that it will issue an arrest warrant against Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia if she fails to appear before it on June 2 for self-defence in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar of Dhaka Special Judge Court 3 cautioned the BNP chief after fixing the new date for appearing before the court.
Earlier in the morning, Khaleda’s councilor Sanaullah Miah filed a time petition showing her illness as the court was scheduled to hear her statements in the case today, reports United News of Bangladesh.
With the rescheduling, the court deferred for the 5th time the recording of the deposition of the BNP chief.
Talking to reporters, Anti Corruption Commission’s lawyer Moshraraf Hossain Kajal said, ‘I seek an arrest warrant against Khaleda Zia today as her lawyers are not keeping promise in this regard, even, the BNP chief also is not showing respect to the court.’
On August 8, 2011, the ACC filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon Police Station accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abuse of power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources.
Besides, the ACC filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on July 3, 2008 with Ramna Police Station charged Khaleda Zia, her eldest son Tarique Rahman, now living in the UK after securing bail, and four others with misappropriating over Tk 21. 0 million (2.10 crore) that came as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.
