Country’s 1st bone marrow transplantation performed at DMCH

The country’s first-ever bone marrow transplantation has been successfully performed at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), raising a hope among local cancer patients.

 

Health Minister Mohammad Nasim announced this at a press conference at DMCH conference room on Monday.

 

A team of doctors, led by Bone Marrow Transplant and Hematology and Hemato-oncology Department head Prof M A Khan and Bimalangshu R Dey, a Bangladeshi doctor working in the Massachusetts General Hospital in the US, carried out the transplantation.

 

The team successfully transplanted bone marrow of a 52-year-old cancer patient, whose identity was not disclosed.

 

It was told at the press conference that patients will be provided free treatment at the Bone Marrow Transplantation Centre over the next three months.

 

The Health Minister said the bad days of cancer patients in the country have gone through the successful bone marrow transplantation at the DMCH.

 

He said from now on Thalassemia patients will also get treatment.

 

Replying to a question, Prof MA Khan said it will cost Tk 5 to 6 lakh for bone marrow transplantation at the centre.
