Country under wild-repressive rule: Khaleda

Accusing the ruling party men of carrying out brutal killing one after another, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday night alleged that the country is now under a wild-repressive rule.

“In fact, there’s no government in the country right now. Democracy has been deported. The country is now under a wild-repressive rule,” she said.

Khaleda, also a former Prime Minister, came up with the remarks while consoling the family members of Mirpur Bihari camp violence victims.

The family members of those killed, injured and affected in the violence at the Bihari camp met at the BNP chairperson at her Gulshan office.

Khaleda alleged that the perpetrators of the heinous killings taking place across the country are not getting punishment as there is no rule of law here.

“Now we don’t get justice as the government has politicised the judiciary. The judiciary now works at the dictate of the ruling party. The ruling party cadres and killers get released even though they committed serious crimes while our leaders and activists are sent to jail and punished for no crime.”

Khaleda reiterated her demanded for forming a judicial probe body to identify those involved in the Mirpur incident and mete out punishment to them.

“It’s necessary to form a judicial probe body to dig out what actually happened, its reasons and who are the perpetrators. It also should ensure proper punishment to the culprits rising above party and opinion. These are what we want,” she said.

If the culprits are not punished, the BNP chief warned, the killing spree will not stop.

Nine members of Mohammad Ysain’s family were killed as miscreants torched his house in the camp while a man, Azad, was shot dead in a clash with police at Kurmitola Bihari camp at Kalshi in the city early Saturday.

Khaleda said the government should have taken stern actions against the perpetrators, irrespective of party and political opinions. “But they didn’t do that. Instead, they arrested those who were affected.”

The BNP chief consoled the family members and assured them of her party’s all-our cooperation, including legal support.

She also provided Yasin with Tk 2 lakh while Azas’s wife Sultana with Tk 1 lakh.

Besides, Khaleda gave financial assistance to the 36 families of those injured and affected in the incident.

The former Prime Minister alleged that the ruling party men committed various dangerous killings in Narayanganj, Feni, Laxmipur, Satkhira and Mirpur. ”As the ruling party men were involved in all the incidents, they are not captured and punished. If the offenders are not punished, the dreadful killing spree will continue to grow.”

“How come brutal killings like Kalshi one can take place? In which country are we living? The continued brutal killings are seriously denting the country’s image abroad.”

Referring to the killing of nine people in fire in a locked house in Mirpur and killing of Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haq by torching his vehicle in Feni reportedly by ruling party men, Khaleda said these incidents have proved that Awami Leaguers had also killed people by torching buses during the opposition’s movement ahead of the January-5 election.

“It’s the habit of the ruling party to burn people to death. They also killed people by setting fire to buses during our movement, but filed false cases against our leaders and activists,” she alleged.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Tariqul Islam and Rafiqul Islam Miah also spoke at the programme.
