BNP spokesman Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday alleged that the government has turned the country into a land of terror by resorting to extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, abductions and other repressive acts.
“Not only Feni, Laxmipur and Narayanganj, but the government has also turned the entire country into a land of terror. People now can’t sleep peacefully at night and come out of their homes at daytime without fear due to the government’s growing repressive acts,” he said.
Fakhrul, the BNP acting secretary general, was addressing a rally at Munshirhat Bazar arranged by the local unit of BNP demanding the release of BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Ahmed Minar Chowdhury, arrested in connection with the murder of Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque.
Earlier, Fakhrul reached Feni around 1pm to distribute relief materials and Iftar items among the destitute and flood-hit people of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s own constituency (Fulgazi, Chhagalnaiya and Parsuram) on behalf of her.
Addressing the rally, Fakhrul alleged that the ruling party men brutally killed Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque over their intra-party conflicts.
He alleged that the government falsely implicated BNP leaders and activists to protect the real murderers.
The BNP leader demanded the government immediately release the BNP leaders and activists implicated in the murder case, including Minar and withdraw the false case filed against them.
He also demanded the government crack down on the perpetrators and ensure their punishment.
He alleged that many ‘false’ cases have been filed against BNP leaders and activists, including its chairperson Khaleda Zia and vice chairman Tarique Rahman to keep them away from politics.
Fakhrul also alleged that the government killed several thousand BNP leaders and activists in the last five years so that they cannot wage a movement.
The BNP leader lamented that Awami League which had started its journey 65 years back to protect democracy had repeatedly annihilated democracy.
He also said the ruling party not only annihilated democracy, but also established a one-party rule – Baksal – under a different cover through holding a ‘farcical and voterless’ election on January 5.
“The government has got totally isolated from people for grabbing state power by force. It’s only able to cling to power by resorting to repressive act. It’ll have to go in the face of a strong movement.”
Reiterating their party’s demand for hold an inclusive election under a non-party caretaker government through talks, Fakhrul threatened to overthrow it through a strong movement together with people.
The BNP acting secretary general distributed relief materials and Iftar items among the destitute and flood=hit people on behalf of Khaleda Zia.
Later, he also addressed a rally at the Fulgazi upazila headquarters and distributed Iftar items ahead of Ramadan.
