The chain of command of police administration has broken down, resulting in slide in human rights and law and order situations, the National Human Rights Commission Chairman (NHRC) chief said today.

“Instead of arresting the real culprits, they (police) are repressing the general people,” Mizanur Rahman said after visiting economist Prof Mahbubullah, who was physically assaulted on the Supreme Court premises Saturday.

Mahbubullah, a pro-BNP teacher of Dhaka University, is now undergoing treatment at Labaid Specialised Hospital in Dhaka.

About the attack on Prof Mahbubullah, Mizanur said intellectuals of a country have the right to give their opinions on any issue. “It cannot bode well for democracy when there are attempts to restrict this right,” he added.

Urging the state and the law enforcing agencies to remain alert, the chairman said, “It is not acceptable that a person will be physically assaulted for expressing his own opinions”.

Talking to the reporters, Prof Mahbubullah told the reporters that he suffered injuries in the right eye but no internal damage has been found.

It is hard to imagine that someone would attack a person like him who has no direct link with politics, the former DU teacher said adding that he had no idea about the identity of his attackers or their motive.

Prof Mahbubullah can under the attack when he was leaving SC premises after delivering a speech at a book launching programme at the SC Bar Association Auditorium.
