There were conspiracies to create an ‘artificial crisis’ in Bangladesh before the Jan 5 polls to disrupt democracy, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has alleged.
“A certain quarter plotted to hinder democratic practices before the Jan 5 polls, much the same way as there was a conspiracy behind the 1974 famine,” she claimed Sunday.
Hasina’s party returned to power with a comfortable two-thirds majority in the 10th national election boycotted by the BNP and its allies.
She recalled that development projects her government had taken up during its 1996-01 term were shut down by the following BNP-Jamaat coalition government.
“This time, our government’s continuation was utterly necessary,” the prime minister said.
Reflecting on the situation during the 1974 famine, she said there was a global financial crunch at that time.
“There were conspiracies as well. Food was bought with cash but the ships bringing them were not allowed to reach in time. It was a huge conspiracy,” she said.
Hasina said she had realised a similar conspiracy was on before the polls.
“A certain quarter tried to oust us and disrupt democracy.
“We successfully tackled the situation thanks to our past experience,” the prime minister added.
