The police and the organisers of Clean Dhaka Concert have provided conflicting reasons about why it had to be postponed.
The concert scheduled for Friday was meant to feature Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor and Bangladesh’s very own Ananta Jalil on the same stage.
Indian playback singers Kanika Kapoor and Javed Ali were also scheduled to grace the stage.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said a lack of coordination among the organisers was behind the last-minute decision.
Antar Showbiz was in charge of organising the concert on behalf of Dhaka South City Corporation. “We had completed all formalities,” its Chairman Swapan Choudhury told a press brief on Thursday evening.
“Kareena was supposed to arrive at 11:30pm on a Jet Airways flight. But police told us to postpone the programme citing security reasons.”
“We informed Kareena in the evening that the show had been cancelled. But we could not elaborate on the security concern. A new date will be announced in one or two days.”
Full refunds will be provided to anyone who wants to return their tickets.
But police said they said nothing of that kind to Antar Showbiz.
“We told Antar Showbiz that they had no planning and seriously lacked in coordination.
“We just requested them to enhance their coordination because it was a huge event after all,” said DMP Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain Sarder.
When asked about DMP’s claim, Choudhury said, “We might have had some lack of coordination with the city corporation. But we like to see things positively.”
