President of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) Prof AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Friday said the country will hurtle towards a civil war if the next national election is not held under a neutral caretaker government.
“If it (civil war) happens, the Prime Minister will have to shoulder all the responsibility,” the former President told a political function in the city.
Krishak Sramik Janata League President Bangabir Quader Siddiqui also spoke on the occasion.
B Chowdhury, however, hoped that the Prime Minister will finally accept the opposition’s demand for the caretaker government. “Sheikh Hasina will ultimately offer the election under a caretaker government.”
He said if the Prime Minister wants to impose anything other than the caretaker government, and any unconstitutional government appears following that, then she will have to take the responsibility. “Even if there’s any confrontation, she must shoulder the responsibility.”
When the entire country is burning, B Chowdhury said, the Awami League has got crazy to retain its power. “The flame will leap further if they get back to power.”
He said the government did not take any step despite plundering of crores of taka from the baking sector, the share market and corruption in Padma Bridge project, and suicide by many affected small investors. “If Awami League returns to power, corruption and terrorism will spread further.”
In a scathing attack on Sheikh Hasina, B Chowdhury said the Prime Minister has killed democracy gradually. “She and her son talk in different fashions. Even, there’s no similarity between their words and actions.”
Quader Siddiqui said the Prime Minister has unleashed chaos in the country through bringing the 15th amendment to the Constitution. “The future of Awami League is bleak.”
He said all will have to take to the streets to unseat Sheikh Hasina as she cannot be removed just through speeches.
BDB Secretary General Maj (retd) Abdul Mannan said AL came to power through a caretaker government but it unfortunately scrapped the system. “They know that they won’t be able to come to power again if the CG system remains there in place. They want hang onto power by flexing muscle.”
