High Court on Sunday asked the government to explain why it should not be directed to destroy the Aedes mosquito and other mosquitoes by spreading medicine for the protection of city dwellers.
The court also directed the government to explain why chikungunya affected people would not be compensated.
The bench of justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husen issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Shujauddowla Akanda.
Health ministry secretaries, mayors of Dhaka, chief executives of Dhaka City Corporations were asked to respond the ruling in three weeks.
The chikungunya virus is transmitted from human to human by the bites of infected female mosquitoes. Most commonly, the mosquitoes involved are Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, two species which can also transmit other mosquito-borne viruses, including dengue, zika and chikungunya. These mosquitoes can be found biting throughout daylight hours, although there may be peaks of activity in the early morning and late afternoon.
