‘Car crisis’ stops Khaleda

The glass right behind her seat is broken due to the attack.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia did not join her party’s city corporation election campaign on Thursday after her motorcade was attacked on three consecutive days.

BNP said the party chief cancelled her campaign schedule for the day as the vehicles carrying Khaleda and her security personnel were damaged in the attacks in the last three days.

The BNP chief started campaigning for her party-blessed mayoral candidates in Dhaka on Saturday evening.

Her special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas told Prothom Alo that the BNP chief will not go for her regular campaign today as all the damaged vehicles have been sent to the workshop.

Khaleda’s convoy was attacked four times — in Uttara on Sunday, in Karwan Bazar on Monday, in Fakirapool on Tuesday and in Bangla Motor on Tuesday — while she was campaigning for BNP-backed mayoral candidates in the city corporation elections.

BNP standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman said the pro-government ‘cadres’ are creating trouble in the campaign but BNP would not back out from the elections as the party has public support.

BNP leader Khandakar Mahbub Hossain on Wednesday said Khaleda will continue with her campaign for the BNP-backed mayoral candidates despite continuous attacks on her motorcade.
