Bullet injured HSC examinee arrested at DMCH gate

A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Thursday placed bullet-injured college student Md Shihab Hossain who was earlier arrested at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital gate on three-day remand in a case filed with the Shahbagh police station on charges of violence.

Shihab, who is an examinee of the ongoing Higher Secondary Certificate examinations from Government Kabi Nazrul College, sustained bullet injury while he was returning home at Matuail after buying essentials from the shops, during  a clash between protesters and police in the Jatrabari area, said Liakat Ali, one of the uncles of Shihab.

‘My nephew was shot in the back, and the bullet pierced through his chest. He was rushed to the DMCH with the injuries,’ said Liakat with tears in his eyes.

‘After two-three days of treatment, he was released from the hospital yesterday [Wednesday] though he was ill,’ Liakat said, adding that police arrested him at the gate of the DMCH while he was leaving the hospital.

‘The doctor has said that if he doesn’t take regular medicines and rest, he may face death if he gets a chest infection. But the police have arrested him though my nephew is not involved in vandalism,’ he said.

Fazar Ali, Shihab’s another uncle, said, ‘Shihab was not involved with any political parties, but police arrested my innocent nephew.’

He also said, ‘Our lawyer, Ashraf Hossain, tried to submit a bail petition with the documents of his exams and medical reports, but his application was not received by the authorities.’

Contacted, CMM court’s general recording officer for Shahbagh police station sub-inspector Nizam Uddin Fakir told New Age, ‘Shishib Hossain was placed on three-day remand in a violence case.’

When asked about his injury, Nizam said that medicines would be provided to him properly as per rules.

Liakat, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver by profession, who came to the court along with his two more brothers, came to the court to see Shihab.

Liakat said, ‘Shihab is the only child of my brother Sohrab Hossain.’

‘Shihab’s father is a physically challenged person, and he could not go outside home for work due to his illness. Shihab’s mother is a housewife and their family is facing financial hardship,’ he added.

‘Shihab used to contribute to running his family through his small earnings coming from teaching students and working as an electrician. We also used to help them as per our capacity,’ he said, adding, ‘I do not know how the family will be maintained.’

A large number of relatives of the arrested were seen crowding the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court premises to catch a glimpse of their arrested loved ones on Thursday from morning to dusk.
