BSMMU lab complete to provide all services to organ transplant

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University has completed its laboratory facilities for the patients intending to transplant their organs.
‘The lab is now ready to provide all kinds of diagnosis facilities for organ transplantation awaiting patients through introducing “Panel Reactive Antibody test”,’ said Shahina Tabassum, professor and chairman of virology department.
‘Earlier, the patients needed to do the test from out of the country, especially they used to go in India which cost around Taka 24 thousand, but here we have introduced the test cost starting Taka 8000 only,’ she added.
BSMMU vice-chancellor Kamrul Hassan Khan was the chief guest of the programme. Pro-vice-chancellor (research and development), M Shahidullah Sikder, founder president of Kidney Foundation Bangladesh and president of the Society of Organ Transplant Bangladesh Harun-Ur-Rashid and former dean of virology department of BSMMU, Nazrul Islam were also present at Dr Milon Hall at city’s Shahbag area.
Harun-Ur-Rashid said, ‘In modern countries about 80 – 90 percent people get new lives through cadaveric organ donations but here (in Bangladesh) it is yet to start as it is very encouraging that cabinet has approved the organ transplant act and BSMMU become able to provide complete facilities to the patients.’
‘Now organ transplantation will be started in the hospital in full fledged,’ he added
Panel Reactive Antibody is a laboratory test routinely performed on the blood of people awaiting organ transplantation.
