A truck driver who sustained severe burn injuries when pickets torched his vehicle in Sherpur upazila on the fist day of the countrywide 48-hour hartal enforced by Jamaat on Wednesday died at a hospital in the capital on Sunday.

Samsul Haque Pramanik, 55, of Gandaram Purbopara village in Shajahanpur upazila in the district, succumbed to his injuries at the Burn and Plastic Surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 2pm.

Victim’s son Lavlu Pramanik, also helper of the truck, said some 25-30 pickets torched their vehicle at Dashmile in Sherpur upazila around 8pm on Wednesday when they were going to Thakurgaon from Sirajganj with fertiliser, leaving Samsul injured.

He was rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital from where he was shifted to the DMCH burn unit the following day and he died at the hospital today.

Lavlu alleged that truck owner Jahidul Islam Jahid, also president of Ward-13 Awami League of Bogra municipality, forced his father to go to Thakurgaon during the hartal hours.

He also alleged that Jahid did not enquire about Samsul while he was fighting for life at the hospital.

Contacted, Jahid said he could not inquire about Samsul as he himself fell sick following the torching of his truck.

Meanwhile, Sherpur upazila Jamaat secretary Dabibur Rahman said his party in no way was involved in torching the truck.
