BNP’s parliament joining depends on ‘govt attitude’

Opposition MPs are likely to join the current 19th session of the 9th Parliament on Wednesday depending on the government’s attitude.

“We the opposition MPS will join the parliament session tomorrow if we find the situation favourable after the Business Advisory Committee’s meeting. We need to assess the attitude of the government,” a senior BNP leader told UNB on Wednesday night after a meeting of the opposition MPs.

The meeting that began around 9:30pm with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair at her Gulshan office ended at about 10:10 pm inconclusively.

Emerging from the meeting, opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque informed reporters that the meeting was adjourned till 8pm on Wednesday.

Earlier, some 38 opposition MPs out of 42 took part in the meeting.

The current 19th session of the 9th Parliament resumes Wednesday. On October 9, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury adjourned the parliament on account of Durga Puja and Eid-ul-Azha.

BNP joined the last budget session, but has been boycotting the current session.

Before the adjournment on Oct 9, senior treasury bench members including Tofail Ahmed, minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta and Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, and JSD MP Moinuddin Khan Badal reminded the opposition that October 24 is not the last day of this House.

They said Parliament will continue until next election is held and the incumbent Prime Minister will hand over power to another elected PM after the election.

Later, on October 13, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the current Parliament will stay till January 24 making it clear that its session can continue until the election schedule is announced.

  1. On this one point BNP has lost confidence of many. Their MPs took oath to speak for the people in the parliament; but unfortunately they refrained from joining the parliament on trivial excuses. They may say they were not given the floor as they asked for; but even then people could watch on the TV what was actually going on in the parliament. But they didn’t go for that while enjoying all the privileges of MPs. This is immoral and against any ethics. A lone MP like Mr. F. Halim often raised storm in the parliament. We watched it. So why being as many as 34/35 in number BNP proved a failure to attract people’s attention and appreciation? This is no proof of being responsible. What will they say to their voters if they again seek their votes?
