A magistrate court in Dhaka on Wednesday granted bail to main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in two violence cases filed with Paltan Police Station on October 28, 2023.

Magistrate Tahmina Haque granted bail for Fakhrul in one case while allowing bail for Khasru in two cases after hearing their petitions.

Earlier, on January 10, Fakhrul granted bail in nine other cases filed with Paltan and Ramna police stations over violence centring the BNP’s October 28 grand rally in Dhaka.

Fakhrul’s lawyer, Syed Jaynal Abedin Mesbah, said that Fakhrul would remain in jail as he has yet to get bail in another case for which he has been in jail since October 29.

He also said that Khasru got bail in two cases, while the hearing on his bail petitions in eight more cases would be held on Thursday.

On December 18 last year, Fakhrul and Khasru were shown arrested in the case after accepting a petition from the police and the court sent both leaders to jail after rejecting remand and bail pleas on the day.

The cases were filed with Paltan and Ramna police stations against BNP leaders and activists, including the two BNP leaders, on charges of blasting crude bombs, attacking the police station, killing a police constable, and preventing police from discharging their duties during violence during the BNP’s October 28 grand rally in Dhaka.

Police arrested Fakhrul at his house in Dhaka on December 29, 2023 while they arrested Khasru on November 3 at his Gulshan residence in connection with a case filed with the Ramna police station over the attack on the residence of the chief justice.
