The BNP has announced countrywide protests on Monday after the police denied permission to hold a rally in Dhaka.
The party said that not allowing a rally ‘clearly points to the existing state of democracy.’
“A registered party, which has ruled the country for five terms, does not get the permission to hold a rally. It’s clear where democracy is in this country,” Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the media on Sunday.
He announced plans for protests in all metropolitan cities and district towns across Bangladesh for Monday.
The BNP had sought police’s permission to hold a rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan either on Nov 7 or 8 to observe the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day.’
They had then sought a clearance to hold a rally on Nov 8 in front the party’s headquarters at Naya Paltan, but police denied receiving any such letter.
The BNP then announced plans to hold a rally on Nov 13 (Sunday).
Police had cleared the BNP to hold rally on Nov 8 at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium, but the BNP rejected it, sticking to its demand for a rally at the Suhrwardy Udyan.
