The BNP on Wednesday welcomed the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh.
The party said it never did anti-Indian politics and never will.
“The BNP never did anti-Indian politics nor will it do so in the future. The BNP works for the sake of the country, and it can’t be said to be anti-Indian,” said BNP international affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon.
He was speaking at a press conference in the Nayapaltan party central office on Wednesday.
Indian prime minister Narenda Modi is due in Dhaka for a two day visit on 6 June.
Asked about whether BNP chief Khaleda Zia is going to meet Narendra Modi or not, the BNP leader said he cannot disclose that right now.
Asked if the BNP expects Narendra Modi to discuss the political crises of the country, he said the political crises were internal issues of the country and the BNP expects no such discussion from Narendra Modi.
“There is no democracy in Bangladesh. That is an internal affair… And the BNP doesn’t expect the Indian prime minister to talk about this,” Asaduzzaman Ripon said.
However, he also said that “anyone may expect democracy to flourish in a neighbouring country, which would be a comfort.”
The BNP hopes the visit will be fruitful and will solve other disputes, including the Teesta Water Agreement between the two nations.
“India said it puts emphasis on relations with a country rather than with a party, and the BNP believes that it is reflected in their actions,” Ripon further said.
