BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Miah has warned the government of ‘unimaginable consequences’ if it tries to detain party chief Khaleda Zia.
He said at a discussion on Friday, “The prime minister in a party meeting said that Khaleda Zia would be detained if there was any trouble.
“Her threat amounts to interference in the affairs of an independent and neutral judiciary,” the member of the policymaking forum said.
“If (Sheikh Hasina) tried to abuse the power of judiciary and threatens to detain Khaleda Zia, then let us clearly state that any such act will have unimaginable consequences.”
The discussion was also attended by BNP publicity secretary Joynal Abdin Farrouque and others.

The media ran reports about the the prime minister’s comment at a meeting of the party’s presidium and advisory council in Ganabhaban on Sept 20.
Later, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a meeting in Brahmanbaria said, “I’m not afraid of detention. Before detaining me, make sure you have a safe passage abroad. Get visas on you passports.”
Miah alleged that a ‘conspiracy’ had been on against Khaleda and her son Tarique Rahman since the time of the army-backed caretaker government.
He said, “False cases have been filed against thousands of BNP stalwarts. The government is trying to subdue the BNP by filing hoax cases against the party.”
BNP leader felt the formation of the National Democratic Front by Shawkat Hossain Nilu by breaking away from the 20-Party alliance was part of the anti-Khaleda conspiracy.
He accused the government of withholding UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message on the 40th anniversary of the UN’s recognition of Bangladesh.
He claimed that Ban had called for a dialogue to end the impasse arising out of the Jan 5 national elections.
