Accusing the government of creating a reign of terror across the country by obliterating democracy, opposition BNP on Friday urged the country’s people to put up a strong resistance to free the country from the clutch of the ruling party.
In a statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also said, “The government’s blueprint to hang onto power for ever by holding a stage-manage election under its own arrangement and resorting to terrorism has put the country’s independence, sovereignty and people’s basic human rights at stake.”
The statement was sent to the media protesting the killing of Tangail BNP leader Rafiqul Islam allegedly by ruling party ‘cadres’.
Fakhrul alleged that the Awami League-led government has got desperate to establish a fascist rule by resorting to killing, making people disappeared, filing false cases against opposition leaders and activists, and arresting, and torturing them and grabbing their houses and property, and setting those afire.
In a sequel to their ‘terrorist activities’, he said, the ruling party men gunned down three-time chairman of Donya Union Parishad and local BNP leader, Rafiqul Islam, at Sadar Upazila in Tangail district this morning.
“A strong and irresistible resistance will have to b created right now to save the country from the terror grasp of the current Awami League regime,” Fakhrul said.
He also demanded the government immediately arrest and mete out exemplary punishment to the killers of the BNP leader.
