BNP will stage demonstrations across the country, except Dhaka city, on Thursday protesting police action against its leaders and activist who gathered outside a makeshift court in the city’s Bakshibazar area when their party chief Khaleda Zia had been there.
BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a press briefing at its Nayapaltan central office on Wednesday evening.
He said BNP leaders and activists will bring out processions rallies in all cities, except Dhaka city, and districts in protest against the police action at Bakshibazar.
“The wave of people hits the area where our leader (Khaleda) goes. Our party leaders and activists gathered outside the makeshift court at Bakshibazar to welcome her. But police launched a heinous attack on them without any provocation,” Rizvi said.
He strongly protested and condemned the police action.
The BNP leader claimed that their around 25 leaders and activists were injured in the police attack while four other arrested in this connection.
He said the attack was made at the behest of the government as it got unnerved and frightened seeing the gathering of people as it has become totally isolated from people.
A chase and counter-chase took place between police and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists when the BNP chairperson reached the court area to be present at the court in connection with the Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases.
The JCD activists hurled some brick chips at the police, prompting the law enforcers to fire several rounds of teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
Rizvi also alleged the ruling party cadres with the help of the law enforcers ransacked BNP and Jubo Dal’s offices in Bogra town. He also claimed police arrested over 50 BNP men in the district.
The BNP leader condemned the attack and demanded immediate release of those were arrested.
