The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday smelled a rat at the Election Commission’s decision to include the people from the age of 15 in the voters’ roll and alleged that the election commissioners had breached their oath.
The party also demanded immediate resignation of the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners for “their involvement in anti-constitutional activities.”
“The failed chief election commissioner and other election commissioners should resign immediately due to their anti-constitutional activities,” BNP spokesperson and international affairs secretary told a media briefing at the party’s central office in Naya Paltan.
Voicing concern over the Election Commission’s decision to enrol people aged from 15 years up in the voters’ roll, Ripon alleged that the EC might have a ulterior motives behind this. “The EC has taken the move to enrol people aged from 15 up, going against legal provisions.”
He continued saying, “We fear that this might be a blue-print to manipulate the upcoming municipality and union council elections to ensure the victory of the candidates backed by the ruling party.”
The BNP leader also accused the election commissioners of breaching their oath and urged President Abdul Hamid to take steps to impeach the election commissioners if they did not resign willingly.
