Opposition BNP on Wednesday sharply reacted to the Prime Minister’s remarks that the next general election will be held at any cost, and the opposition leader cannot foil it, saying that it is her audacity and disrespect to people’s power.
“The Prime Minister through her remarks not only exposed her ignorance but also manifested her audacity. She has ignored people’s power,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi .
He came up with the reaction at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
Earlier on Tuesday addressing a rally at Golapganj upazila in Sylhet, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “The next general election will be held at any cost, the BNP leader (Khaleda Zia) doesn’t have the ability to foil it and we won’t allow her to do that.”
Disapproving the PM’s remarks, Rizvi said BNP chief Khaleda Zia will resist the lopsided and unilateral polls with people’s strong will and power.
“The current Prime Minister could make such remarks as her source of power is not people. Her comments are unacceptable in a healthy political culture,” he added.
Rizvi was also critical about Sheikh Hasina’s another comment that there will be fresh rise in extremism if BNP returns to power, and said, “BNP reined in extremism which had emerged and expanded during the rule of Awami League.”
Reiterating the opposition’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government, the BNP leader said the next election must be held under a non-party caretaker government.
Mentioning that the government betrayed people by scrapping the caretaker government system without their mandate, he said the grand alliance regime annulled the system as part of its hidden agenda. “People through a united movement will force the government to arrange the election under a non-party government.”
About the Election Commission, Rizvi said the activities of the election commissioners have made the commission controversial. “Even some ruling party lawmakers were critical about it. Recently, Awami League MP Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin also criticised the EC. This commission cannot hold a free and fair election.”
