BNP ready for dialogue with ‘illegal govt’ for fresh polls

Criticising the ruling party leaders for seeking the government’s legitimacy from BNP for holding dialogue with it, BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said they are willing to engage in talks with the illegal regime for an early national election through an understanding.

“The ruling party leaders are saying to give the government legitimacy for talks. Their legitimacy seeking has proved that the government is illegal. But we’re willing to sit with this illegitimate administration to resolve the ongoing political crisis in the interest of the country and democracy,” he said.

Fakhrul, the BNP acting secretary general, was addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by National Peoples Party (NPP) protesting the continued killings, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim at a discussion said the dialogue can be held if BNP recognizes the government’s legitimacy.

Fakhrul said they want an election through negotiations with the government as they believe there is no way for a democratic party to go to power without polls.

“The government must sit with our leader Khaleda Zia if it sincerely wants to resolve the crisis. We want to tell the government that engage in talks shunning killings, forced disappearances and repressive acts, and arrange a free, fair acceptable and inclusive election,” he added.

Fakhrul warned that people will spontaneously take to the streets and realise their demand for a fresh election if the government does not respond to their call for dialogue.
