Apprehending streams of people towards BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Sunday to join its ‘March for Democracy’ programme, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken an uncompromising stand to make the gathering point free from public through adopting ‘arrest on sight’ policy.
A competent source at the DMP told UNB that police on Sunday will keep sharp eyes on the movement of people in and around the Nayapaltan office.
“No one will be allowed to enter the venue. If anyone dares to do so he’ll be picked up without any hesitation and put him behind the bars,” said the source, adding that the arrangements for taking people into custody in groups will also be made.
Meanwhile, the DMP authorities have rejected the BNP plea seeking permission to hold the rally in front its Nayapaltan office.
On December 24, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia called upon people from all walks of life to march towards Dhaka carrying the national flag to press home their demand for having the next national election under a non-party neutral administration.
She also asked people to gather at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office on Sunday.
A security blanket will be thrown around the Dhaka city from early Sunday morning to avert any unpleasant incident over the Nayapaltan rally.
The law-enforcement agencies, including members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), will remain on red alert.
Some 10,000 policemen will remain on highest alert in the capital, especially surrounding Nayapaltan area, from early Sunday. Besides, plainclothes police, bomb disposal units from both Detective Branch and Rab, will remain standby to foil any attempt to carry out any blasts.
Another senior police official said security has already beefed up in the city from Friday. “We’ll bring the capital city under security blanket with extra cautionary measures from Sunday morning.”
Besides, police and Rab members were asked to set up check-posts at all entry and exit points in and around the capital as part of the foolproof security measures.
