BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday said their party has formulated an outline for forming a neutral election commission.
Speaking at a news briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, Rizvi also raised doubt whether the president will be able to form an impartial search committee when the ‘prime minister is enjoying absolute power’.
‘There’s no doubt that the prime minister’s directives will be reflected if the president forms a search committee for reconstituting the election commission. That’s why we’ve long been
demanding formation of a neutral and credible search committee,’ he said.
The BNP leader further said a framework on forming an impartial election commission has been made through a committee based on the opinions of party’s senior leaders and professionals having expertise on election. ‘Our chairperson will unveil it at a press conference on Friday,’ he said.
Asked what will be there in the framework, Rizvi said there will be guideline in it as to how a powerful EC can be formed with persons who will not have loyalty to any party.
He said their party wants the EC to be formed in consultation with all the political parties.
Mentioning that the ‘prime minister is enjoying unilateral power like the emperors of mediaeval ages’, Rizvi said people have doubt how the president will independently form a neutral search committee under the circumstances.
This Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led Election Commission is a glaring example of the consequence of a search committee formed by the president, said Rizvi warning that if such a search committee is formed again as per the ruling party’s ‘evil desire’ the country will get destabilised as people will never accept such a committee.
