Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah on Monday alleged that the government is trying to repress BNP leaders and activists by implicating them in “false cases using the name of Bangabandhu and the Liberation War,” reports UNB news agency.

“The ruling party, having failed to face us politically, is now trying to subdue BNP leaders and activists by implicating them in new cases using the name of Bangabandhu and the Liberation War,” he said.

Hannan Shah, a BNP standing committee member, came up with the allegation while talking to reporters after placing wreaths at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave along with leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Trinamool Dal, marking its 9th founding anniversary.

Criticising the government for filing the sedition case against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for her comments over the number of 1971 Liberation War martyrs, he said the case was filed as the regime has no clear idea about treason charge.

The BNP leader said so per he knows their party’s national council will be held on March 19 to reorganise the party. “We’re taking all-out preparations to make our council a success.”

Hannan Shah said their party will form some preparatory committees for arranging the council after party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir returns home from abroad.

Fakhrul, who went to Singapore on Thursday morning for medical treatment, is expected to return home this evening.

Hannan Shah said they will demonstrate how much BNP is organised and disciplined party by peacefully holding their council.

He alleged that the ruling party men are plundering public money from different development projects. “Nearly Tk 90 crore has been spent for per km of Dhaka-Mawa Highway. Huge money is being estimated for different projects in the name of development only to plunder public money.”
