Coinciding the ruling party’s programme, opposition BNP is going to hold a public rally in the capital on October 25 as the countdown for the 10th parliamentary elections will begin on October 27.
The main opposition party on Thursday sought the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) permission to hold the rally at one of three venues — Nayapaltan, Suhrawardy Udyan Paltan Maidan, BNP Dhaka City unit member secretary Abdus Salam told UNB on Thursday night.
BNP leaders, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP vice chairman Sadek Hossain Khoka and Abdus Salam, had a meeting at the party central office on Thursday noon and discussed arrangements to be taken to hold the rally.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will address the rally.
Before leaving the country to Singapore for medical checkup, Khaleda gave directives to her party leaders in this regard.
Earlier in the day, the ruling Awami League also decided to hold a rally in the city on the same day as part of its election campaign.
As both the major political camps planned to stage big political showdowns in the capital on the same day, there is an apprehension of violence as the city saw on October 28, 2006, the day the BNP-led four party alliance government quit power.
Besides, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will address a public rally in Barisal on October 22 as part of its ongoing series of rallies to drum up public support in favour of its demand for restoration of the caretaker government system.
Khaleda earlier addressed public rallies in Narsingdi on September 8 while Rangpur on September 15 and Rajshahi on September 16, Khulna on September 29 and Sylhet on October 5.
