BNP expels Shahjahan Omar for ‘serious breach of party discipline’

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday expelled the party central executive committee vice-chairman Shahjahan Omar from all party posts, including the primary membership for ‘serious breach of party discipline’.

The BNP announced the decision in a press release signed by the party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Thursday evening, less than an hour after the news of Shahjahan Omar’s submission of nomination paper with ruling Awami League ticket from Jhalakathi-1 constituency surfaced in media.

‘BNP national executive committee vice-chairman Barrister Muhammad Shahjahan Omar has breached the party discipline seriously by taking stand against the party,’ the release read.

‘So,’ the release said, ‘as per BNP constitution, Muhammad Shahjahan Omar has been expelled from all party posts, including the primary membership.’

The AL nominated Shahjahan Omar for Jhalakathi -1 constituency to vie in the upcoming general election, scheduled to be held on January 7 next year, AL deputy office secretary Sayem Khan told New Age.

The news of AL nomination for the BNP leader came a day after his release from jail. The detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Shahjahan Omar from a house in the capital in the early hours of November 5 in a case of torching a bus in New Market area in Dhaka on November 4.

The BNP leader walked out of Jail on Wednesday after receiving bail.
