It slams govt for move to undermine Dr Yunus
BNP standing committee member MK Anwar on Tuesday urged the government to hold a referendum on the caretaker government issue to assess public opinion.
“A national consensus has already been created in favour of a non-party caretaker government… if (PM) you have courage, hold a referendum on it to know what people want,” he said.Anwar came up with the call while addressing a discussion arranged by Nationalist Research Foundation at the Jatiya Press Club marking the 6th ‘jail release day’ of BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.
He said they want to resolve the ongoing political crisis over the election-time government through talks. “We don’t want to go for such a movement which will cause sufferings to the country’s people. We want an amicable solution to the political stalemate.”
Anwar, a former minister, also threw a challenge to the Prime Minister saying that if she can win contesting against him in the election he will quit politics for ever.
The BNP leader said the government is making various evil designs to hang onto power through holding the polls under its own administration as the fear of punishment for corruption is haunting it. “But people don’t trust this government and they’ll allow it to materialise its dream of holding the election staying in office.”
Opposing the government’s move to take action against Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus for his alleged tax dodging on his foreign incomes, Anwar said, “Dr Yunus is a person respected by people across the whole world. But the government is providing false and fabricated information against him to make their petty gains.”
The Cabinet on Monday asked the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to take action against Professor Muhammad Yunus as per its report for his alleged tax dodging on his foreign incomes.
Chaired by Nationalist Research Foundation president Barrister Nasiruddin Ahmed Asim, the programme was addressed by, among others, former pro-vice chancellor of Dhaka University AFM Yusuf Haider, BNP chairperson’s adviser AZM Zahid Hossain and Jubo Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal.
