The BNP Standing Committee has demanded an investigation into $300 million allegedly stashed away in banks by prime minister’s son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already refuted the allegation.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir raised the demand while briefing the media on Friday about the decisions taken in the committee’s meeting on Thursday.
Mirza Fakhrul said the government remained ‘silent’ over the money reportedly mentioned in US case documents on a plot to abduct and kill Joy.
“We demand that the government make public the actual matter after properly and impartially investigating the matter,” he said.
He condemned the arrest of magazine editor Shafik Rehman in a case over the plot to abduct and kill Joy in the US.
Asked about Turkey recalling its envoy to protest Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami’s execution for war crimes, the BNP leader said, “It’s Turkey’s decision, so they (Turkey) will react to the matter.”
“We have made our stance on war criminals very clear. We are always for their trial. But the trial will have to be transparent and just and without any political motive. That’s all,” he added.
