BNP on Wednesday briefed foreign diplomats in Dhaka on the latest political developments, law and order and human rights situation, mainly secret killings and forced disappearances, in Bangladesh.
The meeting was held at a Gulshan restaurant in the city.
Asked about meeting BNP vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury told reporters that it was part of their regular meeting with the diplomats.
BNP international affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon said a BNP delegation interacted with diplomats from nearly 38 countries following the growing incidents of killings, abductions and forced disappearances, including Narayanganj seven murders.
The BNP delegation included its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, chairperson’s advisers, Sabihuddin Ahmed, Reaz Rahman, Dr Osman Farroque, international affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon and journalist Shafique Rahman.
A BNP leader present at the meeting told UNB wishing anonymity that they tried to give the diplomats a message that as the current government is illegal it has no control on law and order, law enforcers, administration and even on its party cadres.
They also said the recent spate of the killings and abductions are the result of the social instability due to lack of the democratic practice and the rule of law.
He said they also told the foreign envoys that an immediate inclusive national election is necessary to restore peace, stability, democracy and the rule of law.
The BNP delegation also provided the diplomats with a list of 272 opposition leaders and activists, victims of forced disappearances in the last 14 months across the country along with their detailed information, including photographs and addresses.
The BNP leaders also told the envoys that ruling party men and law enforcers are carrying out the incidents to suppress the opposition.
The recent incident of seven murders in Narayanganj and the alleged involvement of Rab officials in it also came up for discussion at the meeting.
Diplomats of the United States, The UK, the EU, Canada, Pakistan, Germany, Russia, France, Australia, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Turkey, Italy among others, attended the meeting.
