The BNP has announced its programme to mark December, the month when the country achieved independence from Pakistan as well as losing its intellectuals at the hands of Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators in 1971.
The party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement at a press conference after holding a joint meeting with the party’s front and associate bodies at its head office at Nayapaltan in the capital yesterday.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will place floral wreaths at Mirpur’s Martyred Intellectuals’ Memorial on December 14 and at Savar’s National Memorial on December 16, he said.
December 14 is observed to commemorate the intellectuals who were killed during the Liberation War and December 16 to commemorate the victory over the Pakistani occupation forces.
Fakhrul said the party would hold a discussion in the afternoon of the Martyred Intellectuals’ Day. Besides, the party flag along with the national flag would be hoisted at half-mast at all of the party’s offices across the country.
Another discussion would be held on Victory Day, when the national and party flags would also be hoisted atop all the party offices in the morning, he said.
As well as placing flowers at the National Memorial, Khaleda along with her party leaders would also place wreaths at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on the same day, the BNP spokesman said.
On December 13, the BNP-led 20-party alliance will hold a public rally in Narayanganj. They will organise a rally of freedom fighters at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital on December 21.
The Dhaka city unit BNP will also bring out a procession on Victory Day.
The party will hold a discussion at the National Press Club on December 5 to mark Democracy Day. On December 18, former Dhaka University Central Student Union leaders will hold a rally in the capital.
New committee of Muktijoddha Dal
The BNP also announced the new committee of Muktijoddha Dal yesterday.
Fakhrul approved the 191-member new committee of its freedom fighters’ wing, Muktijoddha Dal, headed by Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat and SM Shafiuzzaman Khokon as president and general secretary.
Abdul Hossain, Sadek Ahmed Khan and AKM Nurul Amin were made senior vice president, senior joint secretary general and organising secretary of the committee, respectively.
