The BNP-led-18-party on Wednesday night extended its blockade programme by another 11 hours till 5 am Friday.
“The blockade programme has been extended in protest against the government‘s continued repressive acts, filing of false cases against our leaders and raids on their houses,” BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Razbi told reporters at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
Earlier in the day, the alliance had extended the blockade by 12 hours till 6pm Thursday.
“Now it’ll be a 71-hour blockade instead of 48-hour one as it has been extended by 23 hours from 6am Thursday,” Rizvi said.
Soon after the announcement of the polls schedule by the Election Commission, the opposition alliance on Monday night called the 48-hour blockade programme from Tuesday 6 am.
Earlier, Rizvi also said gayebana janaza will be held across the country on Friday for those killed by ‘police and ruling party men’ during the blockade programme.
Meanwhile, seven people were killed and over 200 injured in violent clashes at different parts of the country on the second day of the 18-party alliance’s 60-hour rail-road-waterway blockade, taking the death toll to 14 in the last two days.
