Paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh has been deployed as hundreds of madrassah students wielding sticks went on rampage in Brahmanbaria town on Tuesday after the death news of one of their fellows, who received injuries during a tripartite clash on Monday evening, spread.
A dawn-to-dusk general strike was announced for Wednesday in the district protesting the killing of the student.
Hafez Masudur Rahman, 18, son of Hafez Ilias Mia, a student of Jamia Islamia Yunusia Madrassah at Kandipara in the town, died at Brahmanbaria General Hospital early today as he received bullet-wounds during the clash, his fellows claimed.
The agitated students ran amok and held demonstration in the town. They also carried out vandalisation at Brahmanbaria rail station, said Rashedul Islam, in charge of Brahmanbaria railway police camp. The students set fire to rail tracks.
Four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh members were deployed in the area to ward off any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, three Dhaka-bound intercity trains got stuck for hours at different rail stations in the district snapping rail communications among Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet routes. The passengers were suffering huge troubles, witnesses said.
Akhaura rail station superintendent Md Jasimuddin said the suspension order on rail communications came from higher authorities following the tense situation in Brahmanbaria town.
The Dhaka-bound train, Subarna Express, from Chittagong got stuck at Akhaura rail station around 10:40am, he said.
Besides, two trains from Sylhet – Kalni Express and Surma Mail – heading to Dhaka, were also stranded at Azampur station in Akhaura upazila.
The students vandalised an office of the district Awami League unit at Hauzarpara and a branch of Bank Asia at Court road. They blocked different roads by burning tyres.
The tense situation erupted following the death of a madrassah student early Tuesday, who received injuries during a clash among the police, activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, local businessmen and madrassah students over a trifling matter in Brahmanbaria town on Monday.
Assistant superintendent of police Taposh Ranjan Ghosh of Brahmanbaria sadar police station rejected the allegation of the student’s death in gunshots. ‘We also came to know the death news but the reason was not clear,’ he said.
At least 50 people, including Masudur Rahman and three policemen, were injured in the clash at Zila Parishad Market in TA Road area on Monday evening.
Witnesses said the clash ensued between local madrassah students and businessmen following an altercation over buying a mobile phone set. Incident of chase and counter chase took place between the police and the students that triggered a clash. Later, BCL activists took part in the clash with the police.
