The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit on Wednesday asked banks to provide details of bank accounts under the name of cricketer Shakib Al Hasan and his wife, Umme Ahmed Shishir.

The anti-money laundering agency sent a letter to all banks and non-bank financial institutions on the day.

Shakib Al Hasan was a lawmaker for the Magura-1 constituency and was a close ally to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission recently fined Shakib Tk 50 lakh for manipulating the share price of Paramount Insurance in 2023.

In the same case, Abul Khayer Hiru was fined Tk 25 lakh and his father Abul Kalam Matber was fined Tk 10 lakh.

Shakib is the chairman of Monarch Holdings Ltd and its managing director is Kazi Sadia Hasan, wife of the controversial stock market manipulator Abul Khayer Hiru.

Shakib and Hiru had been in discussion for share market manipulation since former BSEC chairman Shibli Rubayet Ul Islam joined the commission.

The BFIU also sought bank account details of Hiru’s wife Kazi Sadia Hasan, father Abul Kalam Madbar, brother Mohammed Bashar and sister Kanik Afroz.

BFIU instructed the banks to submit information on savings, current, fixed deposit receipt, and deposit plus scheme accounts held under their names, organisations or companies linked to them, within the next five business days.

The developments came after Awami League president Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.
