The government yesterday formed a seven-member commission to re-investigate the 2009 BDR (now Border Guard Bangladesh) massacre.

Adviser to Home Affairs Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced the formation after attending the BGB medal-award ceremony at Pilkhana Headquarters.

Former BGB Director General Maj Gen ALM Fazlur Rahman will lead the commission, which includes two members from the armed forces, one civil servant, one Dhaka University teacher, one Jagannath University teacher, and one police officer. The chief adviser approved the commission on Sunday.

Earlier, on December 17, the adviser said a re-investigation committee would be formed within five working days to examine the killings during the BDR massacre.

Addressing the ceremony, Jahangir Alam highlighted BGB’s 229-year legacy, commending its professionalism in border security, maintaining law and order, and supporting the civil administration during emergencies and natural disasters. “As a symbol of confidence for the people of Bangladesh, the BGB must remain a vigilant guard of the border,” he said.

Director General Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddique delivered the welcome address, with Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Khuda Baksh Chowdhury and Home Ministry Secretary (Routine Duty) Nasim Ahmed attending as special guests.

During the event, 32 BGB members were honoured for outstanding contributions, receiving medals, including 12 Border Guard Bangladesh Medals (BGBM) and 24 President Border Guard Medals (PBGM).

The adviser later attended a reception for freedom fighters and their families, hosted by BGB.
