The maiden one-day version of Bangladesh Cricket League begins today, providing the national cricketers an opportunity to prepare for the home series against Pakistan.
Four franchises – Prime Bank South, BCB North, Islami Bank East and Walton Central–will take part in the competition, which concludes on April 11.
Players are motivated to raise their confidence before the Pakistan series by putting some commendable performance in the BCL that will also mark a big change in the leadership role.
Mushfiqur Rahim decided not to take charge of BCB North that will be captained by Nasir Hossain.
Mominul Haque is expected to lead Islami Bank East though national Test vice-captain Tamim Iqbal will be available from the second match after performing Umrah.
Mashrafee bin Murtaza will lead Prime Bank while Mahmudullah will be the skipper of Walton Central in the tournament.
The reluctance of Mushfiq to lead BCB North came as a surprise considering he always remained a skipper in the domestic circuit for the last couple of years.
Mushfiq lost his one-day captaincy of national side to Mashrafee in October last year.
‘Mushfiq asked us to relieve him of the responsibility of captaincy,’ tournament director Akram Khan told reporters at SBNS, adding that Islami Bank official preferred Mominul ahead of Tamim as their captain.
The tournament is taken with a lot of enthusiasm among the players who had a lay off after the World Cup.
‘We had a break after the World Cup and everyone was relaxed and spent time with the family. It’s good to start it all over again,’ said Mashrafee.
‘The Pakistan series is quite close so this kind of tournament will be extremely helpful I guess,’ he added.
Mahmudullah, the star performer in the World Cup, agreed with rival captain Mashrafee.
‘Naturally it will help us to prepare. The teams are very balanced and one that plays well will come up as winner,’ he said.
Nasir Hossain is relishing the prospect of being at the hot seat of BCB North while Mominul Haque looked hardly worried with the extra responsibility.
‘I did captaincy at premier league with BKSP six years ago. So it’s nothing new,’ said Mominul.
The champions side will receive Tk 15 lakh while runners up will be awarded with seven lakhs.
Man of the tournament will earn one lakh while man of the match will get tk 25,000.
Each ‘A’ grade player will receive Tk 50,000 while B grade player will get Tk 30,000 for playing per match.
