Two persons among those who attacked Khaleda Zia’s motorcade on Monday have been identified from the photos captured during the incident.
They are Al Amin, a member of Tejgaon thana Chhatra League’s executive committee, and Jakir, vice-president of ward 26 Chhatra League.
Confessing his involvement in the attack, Al Amin told the Bangla Tribune over phone: “I went there for shopping. I got hurt when a brick was hurled at my hand and then I protested.”
When asked about the reason for launching the attack, Al Amin replied that everyone knows the reason.
He said that he is a honours student at Tejgaon College.
Asked whether he is involved in politics, the BCL activist said: “No brother, I do not do politics.”
When the Bangla Tribune reporter called another BCL leader Jakir around 12:34am Tuesday, he admitted that he is a Chhatra League leader and said his father was ill. Then the call was disconnected.
Around 12:47am, Jakir called the reporter back. When asked about the attack on Khaleda’s motorcade, he said: “We did not launch the attack. I did not even go to Karwan Bazar at that time.”
When informed that he was seen attacking Khaleda’s motorcade with a piece of wood, Jakir replied: “I was not there. Follow it up carefully. How can you get me in the photo when I did not go there?”
Then he disconnected the call.
On Monday, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade came under attack in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar when she was campaigning for the upcoming city polls. Khaleda got away unhurt but several members of her entourage were injured.
BNP and Chhatra Dal leaders alleged that Tejgaon thana Awami League Organising Secretary Golam Mowla Chowdhury Mala and Dhaka North BCL Organising Secretary Mizanur Rahman led the attack.
However, holding Khaleda responsible for the attack, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the BNP chief has started staging a drama before the people of the country as the Dhaka and Chittagong city polls are approaching.
