Bangladesh wants project on hydroelectricity, wind power with ADB

Bangladesh wants to initiate a pilot project for wind mapping and hydroelectricity potential here with the support of Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Bangladesh Power division secretary Monwar Islam expressed the desire during the ADB initiated workshop at Bidyut Bhaban in the capital on Sunday.

The ADB officials responded positively to the proposal of the power division, the officials who attended the meeting said.

Senior officials of Power Division, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and ADB were present at the daylong workshop.

The BPDB now produces 220MW of hydroelectricity at Kaptai in Chittagong , an official said.

“But it is possible to raise hydroelectricity production to 500MW by tapping hydrocarbon potentiality at Sangu, Matamuhari and Feni rivers and using macro and mini hydrocarbon potentiality at Banchkhalin, Sitakunda and Chittagong Hill Tracts districts,” the official said.

In 2003, the USAID conduct a feasibility study on hydroelectricity potentiality here and found 750MW hydroelectricity potential. But it reduced drastically as India set up several dams in upstream, the official said.

Bangladesh , however, has sought ADB funding for solar irrigation facilities for 300,000 irrigation pumps during Boro paddy season.
