Police detain nine people from spot
At least 20 people including a policeman were injured as cricket fans went on a rampage and clashed with police at Chashara in Narayanganj this morning after failing to collect tickets for the Bangladesh-New Zealand cricket match.
Police said several cricket fans staged a demonstration on the Bangabandhu Road in Chashara area when the guards of United Commercial Bank (UCB) Narayanganj branch told them that the tickets for the third one-day match between Bangladesh and New Zealand would be sold on Saturday (tomorrow), instead of today.
Failing to avail tickets, the agitated cricket fans threw brick chips at the bank and vandalised some 15-20 vehicles passing through the area.
On information, police rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.
As law enforcers tried to disperse them, a chase and counter-chase took place between them that triggered a clash leaving at least 20 people injured.
Police fired several gunshots to bring the situation under control.
Traffic on the busy road came to a halt for one hour following the incident.
Manjur Quader, officer-in-charge (OC) of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station, said the cricket fans had started gathering under the UCB building since morning.
But they got incensed when they heard that the tickets for the Bangladesh-New Zealand 3rd ODI cricket match would be sold just one day before the match.
A police constable was injured in the clash, added the OC.
Police detained nine people from the spot.
