Bangladesh-US for more security cooperation

Dhaka seeks fund from the US for combating violent extremism

Bangladesh and the United States have discussed to have more security cooperation in view of the complex situation of the issue.

Bangladesh’s foreign ministry held a meeting at Washington to secure funds from a recent initiative to counter violent extremism across the globe.

However, it was yet to be decided on the amount Bangladesh will receive from the fund.

Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque attended the meeting of Global Community Engagement and Resilience fund in Washington on Thursday (local time).

“We discussed defence and human security concerns. We have preliminarily discussed on having more engagements,” the secretary said.

Discussions were also held on anti-terrorism, natural disaster, climate change and other security aspects that were told to the Dhaka Tribune from Washington.

According to him, Bangladesh’s initiative has been well appreciated in the second steering committee meeting of the fund committee.

“Officials from different countries and private sectors finalised the shape of the fund. It is yet to be decided how much money Bangladesh will receive.”

The fund, initiated by the US and Turkey last year, is supported by over 20 countries and private sectors.

Recently, US ambassador to Bangladesh Dan Mozena praised Bangladesh for its efforts for engagement with the fund.

Bangladesh and the US will hold their third defence dialogue on April 22. The third security dialogue will be held on April 16 and the third partnership talks will be held in mid-June.
